The Collapse of Ambow Education and NewSchool of Architecture and Design

Ambow Education, the principal owner of the New School of Architecture and Design (NSAD) in San Diego has been cited by the New York Stock Exchange as a Non Compliant Issuer and risks imminent delisting from the exchange. The warning was delivered on September 21, but the company has yet to notify its shareholders.

The Higher Education Inquirer reported on Ambow's financial problems in May 2022.

In January 2023, Ambow Education's other US school, Bay State College, lost its regional accreditation. After losing its appeal with its accreditor NECHE, Bay State College closed its doors in August. NewSchool of Architcture and Design remains open with less than 300 students. NSAD is currently on Heightened Cash Monitoring by the US Department of Education due to ongoing financial problems.

  1. The weak educational organizations are starting to fall apart even before the 2027-2030 student contraction begins, just because of the strains of COVID-19 and a now-fragile economy.

  5. I wrote a Yelp review about this school when it was accredited back in July 2012. I still stand by this review: New School of Architecture and Design is a FOR-PROFIT school that uses most of its tuition money for recruitment and advertising.

    PROS:

Location, in the heart of Downtown San Diego.

    CONS:

PRICE: Price of tuition is high, return on investment near zero
INSTRUCTORS AND CLASSES: Few instructors and class choices

CAMPUS: What campus?, no student rest areas, no air conditioning, no drinking fountains

COUNSELING: Virtually non-existent. They got rid of their general guidance counselor. Freshman students working on models late into the night early in the morning with Exacto blades, need I say more.

*I hope this school goes out of business soon.

Just a few weeks ago a recruiter asked me why I left the school and offered me $25 to answer a few survey questions. I declined the money and the interview.

    1. Should we do an update? The accreditor, WASC, actually upgraded the school from a "Warning" to "Notice of Concern." https://www.thelayoff.com/newschool-of-architecture-and-design

    2. WASC Warning have been removed as of Spring 2024. School moved to a new, modern facility in April 2025. Not only there are students lounge areas, large kitchens and study areas, there is a beautiful outdoor space available. You can''t judge a school based on what happened in 2012.

    3. To "Anonymous of August 5", this is the same thing that happened to the Thomas Jefferson School of Law which is nearby at 701 B Street; they lost their freestanding buildings and were forced to become tenants in an office building. It was worse for the School of Law because the American Bar Association stripped them of their ability to teach federal law, so they are hobbled in only teaching California state law, which means their students can only take the "baby bar" (with some aftermarket tutoring on any federal laws that come up in the test.) The NewSchool of Architecture lacks these impediments, but it still is a for-profit technical college, with all the built-in issues of a for-profit technical college.
